I am truly honored, proud and blessed to have such a warm, sincere and compassionate Nurse Clara Memba, as part of the University Hospital (UH) family. Clara has been employed at UH for approximately nine years, and she has always provided service excellence to patients and their families by displaying acts of kindness, empathy, and promoting positive patient outcome by providing the highest standards of care.
A couple of months ago, a patient by the name of A.A. was admitted to UH and was assigned to F-Yellow and Clara was one of the nurses who provided care to him. It was at that time his bond with Ms. Memba would prove to be a wonderful, heart wrenching beginning and ending for both the patient and the nurse. A bond so strong it is almost magical.
Mr. A.A. was a 35 year old male admitted with advanced metastatic liver disease with poor prognosis of only a couple of months to live. While providing care to the patient he communicated to her that he had only one wish before dying and that wish is to return home to Ghana to see his family. However, he was unable to afford the trip back home. After listening to the patient Clara was so full of emotion, she knew that she had to somehow grant this patients’ last wish.
Clara worked diligently with his friends, and his church to raise money so that he could travel to Ghana to see his family once again before he died. Clara was determined to make a difference in this patient’s life. She was able to raise enough money so that he could travel to Ghana to be with his family, his last wish was granted. Sadly, though he died shortly after arrival to his home, Ghana.
This is truly going above and beyond the call of duty. This is a true patient advocacy story, one that surpasses all others. If anyone deserves to win the DAISY Award, it is Clara Memba, as she is truly amazing.
