Traumatic accidents are things that happen to people we don't know, people we just hear of, and stories on TV. But to have a traumatic accident happen to your own child is a parent's worst nightmare.
Our baby Z fell from a second story loft and had multiple skull fractures, swelling and bleeding throughout the brain. She was airlifted from where we live to El Paso's Children's Hospital. The unexpected, the uncertainty, and the unknown are feelings parents have when they are apart from their child. Arriving late at the hospital from what seemed to be the longest three-hour drive of our lives, we expected all our questions to be answered. Instead, when we arrived, the medical team assisting Z was running back and forth while only mildly informing us of her condition. During this time, we became exhausted from the anxiety and fell asleep. At about 3:00 AM, we were awakened by the medical team only to be told our little baby was very critical. We thought our baby was gone at that moment. It was at that moment that Nurse Christian Quiambao introduced himself and very politely and compassionately expressed his desire to help us and Z fight for the best outcome possible.
Christian was Z's nurse for the next three nights before she passed. It was evident that he loves his job and he showed it by providing exceptional and sincere care for our baby Z. Each day he made certain that we were informed about every procedure being performed, as well as what we could expect to happen. He broke down every doctor's explanation so that we could understand and make informed decisions. All the while, his manner and actions were empathetic, kind, patient, gentle and very attentive. It was as if Z was a part of his family. It didn't matter that his shift was over; he stuck around to make sure we were still okay. Especially on the last morning, staying two hours extra. We grew very fond of him and thanked him every night for the exceptional care he provided our baby girl.
Christian's exceptional work made going through our worst nightmare a little more bearable. His knowledge and professionalism, compassion, honesty, and perseverance have set him apart. We claim him as part of our family and will forever be thankful for his sincerity and desire to help Z fight to the end.
