Chris admitted an elderly confused female patient from ED. She was living at home with her son, but he was found dead and she had fallen on the floor. When admitted to Chris' unit, she was very distraught and so confused and disoriented that she did not realize that her son had passed away. Chris spent a lot of time with the patient, trying to get her to calm down.
Chris also used his own cell phone to call the patient's daughter in Idaho since the phone in the patient's room could not make long-distance calls. Being able to talk to her daughter really calmed her down, and Chris made sure to spend the extra time with her to keep her calm. He stayed past the end of his shift to remain at her bedside and make sure that she was asleep, and he again used his own cell phone to contact the daughter and give her an update on her mom's condition.
Chris went above and beyond to care for the patient and her daughter after having to go through the horrible situation of their son/brother's sudden passing. Through the compassion that Chris showed to them, he made the bad situation a little bit easier for them to handle.
