Carla Stainer, RN, PACU was recognized for her compassionate care. Here are some excerpts about her from a patient letter:

Carla was caring for a woman post-surgery, who upon her first waking moments, had some negative feedback to share. The hospital was "a horrible place" and everyone in it is dreadful and incompetent. She wondered aloud, if this was the sort of incompetence and work conditions that her poor physician son had to deal with day after day. Carla was calm, compassionate, and non-judgmental; she spoke in a kind, quiet manner. She repeatedly reminded the woman that it was OK for her to feel that way that everyone reacts differently to anesthesia. Suddenly the patient softened and soon she was happily engaged in conversation about her life now smiling, pleasant, and grateful. By consistently and patiently affirming her at her worst, Carla accepted the patient for who she was, and brought out her best!
