Carla approaches each shift with a positive attitude carrying this on to her patients. She has given patients, who may have not had a real shower, a spa day, even getting the bariatric chair for a much deserved patient, asks for assignments back so she can detangle a patient's hair 2nd, 3rd, 4th day in a row, and taken someone outside to feel the warmth of the sun, smell the fresh air and stroll the garden.
Carla is able to develop a trusting bond with her patients and collaborates and challenges them and their families and the multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care all within the demands of the day of the nurse. She once again demonstrated compassionate nursing care the other day.
Carla had a patient who has been with us for several weeks. This patient had multiple bedside procedures scheduled that day - wound vac change, dialysis, physical therapy, along with trach care, meds, antibiotics to time within procedures and daily hygiene needs. She made several phone calls with several depts. advocating for her patient for the best plan of care that day. Carla was able to coordinate everything among all specialties.
I was surprised to see Carla sitting calmly in her patient's room later that afternoon conversing with the patient and the family. This patient, when she has Carla, you can see hope in her eyes. She has given this patient the will to challenge herself. She definitely role models how one can get the task list done and still develop a relationship with your patient and family and find the time to provide Humancare - a shower, tangle-free hair, a stroll outside - which in turn brings a glimpse of hope to our sickest patients. She definitely inspires others that it can be done!
