Bry has been caring for children and their families as a bedside RN since 2004. Day in and day out, I have watched her exhibit tremendous caring and compassion toward patients that are difficult to care for (and oftentimes other nurses are not able to care for) due to their medically complex diagnosis and difficult social situations. She has been a primary nurse for one of our medically complex patients (EW) for many years and has shown great dedication to her and her family even through the toughest times. She has in multiple occasions, because of her expertise, anticipation and advocacy, prevented incidents that could have threatened EW’s life.

She is an expert in caring for Transplant, ENT, Urology, General Surgical patient populations and always goes above and beyond to continue to educate herself and fellow nurses. In fact, she spends some of her spare time at home reading books/journals on transplant patients and shares her knowledge with others whenever the opportunity arises. As an ENT liaison, she has been very successful in bridging the communication gap between the nurses and our physician partners to ensure the best possible outcome for these patients. She has also provided ENT education to fellow nurses in Level 6 and other units as well.

Bry is an excellent preceptor to both nursing students and new nursing graduates. She expects them to provide the same high level of care that she provides to patients/families. In my opinion, what truly makes Bry special as a nurse is that she pours her heart and soul into her job, providing direct patient care, as a relief charge RN, as an ENT liaison or as a preceptor. She exemplifies Children’s Hospital’s mission and values in every sense of the word.

I recently received a wonderful email from a child’s parent she recently cared for and it speaks for itself:

“This letter is late in coming to you but the sentiments are still very fresh and vivid. Our son had a horrific skiing accident which shattered his jaw and caused some minor internal injuries. We subsequently spent about a week at the Children's Hospital as he was treated and recovered from his injuries. I still marvel at the wonderful care he was given and how we were all treated by the entire Children's staff of nurses, doctors and administrators.

I did want to commend Bry Patterson specifically. My wife and I became very fond of Bry as the care she provided our son was exceptional. She is very competent in what she does, shows compassion and patience. Bry always made sure he was comfortable and helped us feel as good about the situation as possible. She explained to us what she was doing with him, from the medicines and pain meds to why she was pushing him to walk a bit further down the hall. Communication is the key and it made us feel confident about what was happening with him.”
