Brooke sat with the family with tears of sadness making sure the family was comfortable with their decision.
Brooke Torrey took on the role of primary nurse for a patient with end-stage cancer. She has worked extensively with the family and all members of healthcare team to make sure her patient was well cared for. With a diagnosis of terminal cancer and palliative care being implemented, she stayed strong. Caring for a patient who is intubated, awake, and unable to move, she made sure her patient was taken care of. With the family having a difficult time accepting the diagnosis, she has stayed a constant caregiver for her patient. She has helped them through the stages of grieving: Anger, Denial, and finally some acceptance.

Re-introducing the PACT team when the family had refused earlier, taking the extra time to make sure the family's questions were answered and understood and truly caring for the family as a whole. The recent decision for the family to make their child a DNR was because of her love and care for the family and child. Sitting with the family with tears of sadness making sure the family is comfortable with their decision, knowing that she will miss her little angel as well, touched my heart.

She is what true nursing care is: Caring for the family as a whole, standing up for her patient, and loving someone enough to know when it is time to let go. Brooke Torrey is a true inspiration for us all.
