Brittany Reaghard was nominated for the DAISY Award for exemplifying extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care while caring for a chemotherapy patient on Unit 5A. The patient previously had a terrible reaction to her first cycle of the chemotherapeutic agent experiencing a fever, shivering, diaphoresis, nausea, and vomiting for 12 to 13 hours after treatment. Brittany faced the patient’s next treatment with great trepidation despite that the patient was pre-medicated with steroids to prevent another reaction. Carefully monitoring the patient’s reaction, she successfully administered the next chemotherapy cycle. The patient described her as being very vigilant and detailed-oriented while explaining all aspects of care, as well as upbeat, encouraging, confident, and having good judgment. Brittany worked in collaboration with the oncology nurse practitioner to ensure the best outcome for the patient and adjusted the chemo rate according to the patient’s tolerance level. She even adapted her work schedule to accommodate the patient’s next chemo treatment. The patient was elated by the care she received from Brittany in saying, “That Brittany is really special. I always feel confident during my treatments.”
UPMC St. Margaret salutes Brittany Reaghard for her dedication, compassion, knowledge, and professionalism.
