Bonnie was our units’ resource nurse. We received a call from L& D stating that they needed us to care for a newborn because the mom was bleeding. Bonnie could have given the care to another nurse who had only one baby. She brought the baby and the father to our unit and the night’s long emotional events started. The father was already very upset and distressed. He was a police officer and military vet and knew that his wife could die. Bonnie spent the entire night listening, giving support and feedback, helping the father focus on the baby, taking pictures, stating “This is a mom thing. Let’s do this for her” and allowed him to have family members in to the NICU for emotional support. She got him the Rossi Room to rest in. When the physician and the L& D nurse came to explain the next step, she was at his side. She was calm and caring, giving of herself and her time. I feel that Bonne went way beyond her job and showed true compassion for the ordeal that his dad was going through.
