Allison Wess consistently goes above and beyond for all of our patients on 4 Central. During the week of December 20th, Allie provided care for a recently transferred 23 year old male patient with a newly implanted Paracorporeal Ventricular Assist Device (PVAD). This particular VAD is outside of the body and can cause a patient to have a great deal of body image issues beyond having a mechanical heart. The patient was transferred from the Cardiothoracic ICU with the unit’s portable DVD player so that the patient could watch movies once he was feeling well enough to do so. Unfortunately, the DVD player stopped working before the patient could watch the first movie. Allie, who lives across the street from the Hospital, went home on her meal break and brought back her own DVD player for the patient to use and movies for the patient to watch. This display of compassion and empathy started a chain reaction and a number of other staff members have been bringing in DVD movies (new and old) for the patient to watch. Ms. Wess identified that this patient was having a lot of anxiety and loss of control issues and attempted to ease this patient’s concerns, pain, and hospital stay with entertainment. The patient cannot stop talking about how grateful he is to Allie for the great care she provides and the display of thoughtfulness and kindheartedness. This is just one example of the many things that Allie does for her patients that has afforded her Shining Star Cards, 4C “You Rock” Cards, Falcon Awards, and letters/greeting cards filled with praise from patients. Her concern and kindness sincerely makes a difference in her patients’ lives. Allison Wess truly deserves the DAISY Award.
