Aleta stands for A-Angel, L-Loving, E-Educator, T-Tell it like it is A-Amazing according to her nominator.

It was working with Aleta that reminded me that a nurse isn’t just a nurse. One nurse can make a difference in the life of a person, and it doesn’t have to be a patient. It started when I was pulled from my pediatric unit to go assist on the post partum unit. During report I became a little uneasy about hearing that three of my patients were first time mothers and all of them were having difficulty breastfeeding and all the babies needed their blood sugars checked.

My first patient, was anxious and worked with the lactation consultant the day before but still was having issues. Well, I assessed the baby and checked the baby’s blood sugar. Aleta was with me and she started her encouraging words to the mother and before long the baby was able to latch on. The mom was so happy she started to cry. The mom was so worried that she wouldn’t be able to breast feed. Aleta dried her tears. This was an inspiring moment. Aleta was the angel. She continued to work with the mother. She had more patience than I did that day.

I thought I would use the same techniques that Aleta used on my first patient for my next patient. Boy, was I wrong. No matter what I tried the baby would not latch on. I called Aleta for her advice. Again, the look on this mothers face as she was so happy and grateful for Aleta’s persistence and calm reassuring words. It was how she educated these new mothers with her calming words that touched my soul.

I could tell you about my third patient but by now I hope you realize how impressed I was with Aleta. I wish everyone could feel her energy because it wasn’t what she did but how she did it that made such an impact on these new mothers. She touched the hearts of my patients by doing what she loves and what she does best. I felt blessed to be surrounded by her energy and wisdom that day!
Thank You Aleta! You are certainly one of Beaumont’s Best Nurses.
