The need was identified for patient education prior to Knee Replacement Surgery from bedside nursing. Before Joint Camp, our patients would arrive to the unit after surgery without a clue on what to expect. They would complain of his/her leg weighing a ton. They would try to prop pillows under new knee (a big no-no). They didn't understand the reason for getting up the day of surgery. They wanted to stay for several days and did.
Nursing asked to go to clinic to teach before surgery but that was not ideal d/t patient clinic appointment dates were spread out.
Care Management and Physical Therapy also had needs for education prior to surgery.
This resulted in the development of Joint Camp.
One of the requirements for Knee Replacement Surgery is for the patient and a family member to attend Joint Camp prior to admission. Every patient receives a booklet with instructions for pre-op, surgery, post-op, nursing, and physical therapy exercises. One or two of the 9 Ortho AUMs or nurses attend each session and review what is to be expected as soon as the patient arrives to the unit. The patient has now met a nurse dressed in blue scrubs they may see on arrival to floor. Questions are answered, and patients are educated for knee replacement surgery. This supports Parkland's Mission, Vision, and CIRCLES.
There is not a budget for this service. The team members were selected from 9 Ortho to be experts on inpatient nursing care. Nurse's work together covering each other's patients when necessary to ensure someone is able to attend Joint Camp.
The results of the Joint Camp have proven to be a success. The patient often is greeted with the familiar face of the nurse who educated him/her at Joint camp. Length of stay has decreased, and patient satisfaction has increased.
