Lt Rosario's clinical skill and especially her compassionate care exemplify the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model.
Earlier this year, I was admitted into L&D to be induced. After a long night, I was greeted in the morning by a new nurse, Lt Rosario. At first, I thought she would be just as my previous nurse I had all night, no communication whatsoever. Lt Rosario started off by asking about me and my family, did we need anything and how I was feeling. She then proceeded with making small talk, trying to get to know me. I told her it was my fourth pregnancy and that I had two previous c-sections and was hoping to get a VBAC. I told her I knew deep down in my heart that I was going to give birth. She said that was awesome, and she really encouraged me.
After our talk, the doctor walked in and said that I was a failure to progress and at that point, he suggested a c-section. My heart fell through the floor, and I had a big knot in my throat. Lt Rosario looked at me and I know she must have seen my disappointed face when she suggested to the doctor that I could try pushing and see how that went. The doctor agreed. She then came to me and said, "Okay girl, this is when you gotta give it all you got". We proceeded to do trial pushes and after what seemed like forever, another Doctor walked in and also suggested a c-section. I then felt beyond confident and said, "Not yet". The doctor stepped out and Lt Rosario continued to guide me. We tried several positions and finally, she said, "I see a head". Doctors flew in and I pushed with Lt Rosario by my side. I then gave birth to my baby girl. Lt Rosario said, "You did it!"
I don't know why, but I still cry to this day. I told my husband, had Lt Rosario not been there and believed in me the way I believed in myself, I would have ended up again in the OR. Lt Rosario helped me achieve a successful VBAC. She helped me gain my confidence as a woman. That my body is not broken, that I am able to give birth like other women. She is an angel. I have never come across a nurse like Lt Rosario. She cared for me and my needs. This is an experience I will never forget.
