I think there is no better place in the world to have a cardiac arrest than on this particular unit. Recently, a young man was visiting his mom, who was being well taken care of on the unit. He stepped out of the room and had an unwitnessed cardiac arrest. Our team immediately initiated the ACLS protocol and saved his life. Perhaps more importantly, their immediate recognition of his condition and institution of effective CPR maintained cerebral perfusion and the patient has excellent recall of events up to when he walked out of his mother's room. Amazing. Then the Cath Lab team did their usual excellent work (which all of us take for granted) and opened up his artery before the CCU team took over.
I imagine there is no greater loss than losing a child. Thanks to this team, our patient is doing well and his mom and daughter are as happy as we are.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my admiration, appreciation, and respect for the phenomenal staff of100 South.
