Cinnabon Wows Nurses During Nurses Week 2007

nurses week posterDuring Nurses Week 2007, more than 30 Cinnabon Bakeries in Atlanta, New York, Northern California, and Toronto, Canada participated in a pilot promotion with The DAISY Foundation. In appreciation of the extraordinary service nurses provide on a daily basis, these locations collectively gave away over 730 5-count packs of CinnabonStix™ to nurses who showed their healthcare badges.

The promotion included a beautiful 22” x 28” back-lit poster and counter card (pictured above) touting the product offer, outreach to local and nursing profession media, networking with current DAISY hospitals in the test markets to help spread the word, opportunities for bakery employees to nominate hospitals for The DAISY Award, and tracking forms for nurses to indicate which healthcare organization they represent. From east to west and north to south, nurses who visited participating bakeries greatly appreciated the gesture extended to them. Cinnabon received comments such as, “Thank you so much!”, “I love that you’re doing this!”, and “I love coming here – keep up the good work!” on the tracking forms.

Bonnie Barnes, co-founder of The DAISY Foundation, was very appreciative as well. “We’re grateful to have the tremendous support of Cinnabon, and we look forward to a long-lasting relationship. Jennifer McLaughlin, head of Corporate Communications for Cinnabon’s parent company, FOCUS Brands, and our newest DAISY Board member, joined Mark and me in Northern California for Nurses Week. Together, we made about a dozen DAISY Award presentations. At every hospital, the Cinnabon brand and promotion received a rousing round of applause. After about 30 years in brand marketing, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a brand that has such a universally positive image as Cinnabon has. We are very fortunate to have their help in our effort to honor nurses around the country.”

Cinnabon looks forward to rolling out the DAISY Foundation program nationwide in time for Nurses Week 2008.

The DAISY Foundation Receives a Jefferson Award For Public Service in February, 2007

The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 to "encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service." In 1977, they created The Media Partnership to seek out grassroots "Unsung Heroes" and take on the role of administering the program across the country. We are honored that the San Francisco Chronicle and KPIX-TV CBS television and KCBS-AM in San Francisco have selected The DAISY Foundation as one of their "unsung heroes."

UnitedHealthcare Makes Media Coverage Happen For DAISY Nurses

untied health At the suggestion of DAISY Board member Lynne Doll, we applied for a grant to UnitedHealthcare's foundation last year. Not only did they generously fund our request but also their Director of Public Relations, Tyler Mason, came up with the great idea of sponsoring six DAISY Award hospitals and providing a public relations professional to get media coverage for DAISY presentations at those hospitals. Tyler's belief (which we share, of course) is that the nursing shortage impacts everyone, including companies like UnitedHealthcare whose business relies on hospitals being able to care for their insurance clients. UnitedHealthcare wants to do what it can to help hospitals manage the shortage, and they see The DAISY Award as a valuable recognition program that achieves that goal. Additionally, UnitedHealthcare is a tremendous employer of nurses throughout the U.S., so Tyler was eager to do something special for the profession.

The first media event they sponsored was The DAISY Award presentation at San Francisco General Hospital in December, 2006. Presenters included Gene O'Donnell, the hospital's CEO, Sue Currin, Chief Nursing Officer, David Hansen, Chief Executive Officer, UnitedHealthcare California, and the Barnes's. The hospital chose to honor that month Grace Lopez, the charge nurse in the Emergency Department on the day that 13 people were brought in at once. They were pedestrians on a sidewalk when they were hit by a crazed driver. Grace's skill in this highly stressful situation merited her special recognition by her peers and hospital administrators. And thanks to UnitedHealthcare, all of San Francisco's media were there to cover it! That night, Grace and The DAISY Award were all over the news - the kind of positive coverage for nurses we at the Foundation want to see much more of!

Association of California Nurse Leaders Select The DAISY Foundation As Their Friend of Nursing For 2006

Association of California Nurse Leaders Select The DAISY Foundation As Their Friend of Nursing For 2006 As we said when the President of ACNL called us to tell us this incredible news, "We're in the 'business' of honoring nurses - not being honored by nurses!" But we were ever so thrilled that The DAISY Award is having this kind of impact on the nursing profession. Making it especially meaningful was having DAISY Board Member Mary Dee Hacker, RN, MSN, Vice President, Patient Care Services of Childrens Hospital, Los Angeles, present the award to Co-Founders Bonnie and Mark Barnes. Also attending the presentation of the award at ACNL's annual meeting in Los Angeles in February, 2006, were DAISY Board members Lynne Doll, President, The Rogers Group; and Judy and Bruce England, Family Sponsors of the DAISY Award at Children's Hospital, Oakland, and Renown Regional Medical Center.
