On the day and night of January 3, 2010 I met Lei, who was assigned to my husband. She listened to our concerns and responded with extraordinary service and compassion. My son and I had just come to terms with my husband’s desire to not be placed on a trach/vent and feeding tube. Of course, this meant we would have to let him pass on. The other staff and professionals appeared to treat my husband as a machine without concern for the quality of his human life. I know her compassion came at great emotional cost to her own well-being. I will always remember her. –Mary Portscheller (patient’s wife)
