Alison Wrigley, RN, BSN

Emergency Medicine

UCLA Health System, Los Angeles, California

Alison was nominated by three of her peers that were witnesses to the great work Alison did with her patients and under pressure.  Her compassion and advocacy for nurses and patients alike make her an exemplary model of high-performance nursing.

“Since I started as a new grad in the Emergency Department, I have been surrounded by great examples of caring compassionate nursing.  However, Alison is outstanding given her continued commitment to excellent care.  I hope that I am able to obtain her knowledge and wisdom while remaining unjaded and ever level-headed.  On a typical weeknight where Alison is the "queen bee" in charge, we may have transient intoxicated patients lining the halls, patients in police custody all while patients are being brought in by family and medics.  She rarely raises her voice and if she does, it’s usually because you know her patience has been tried by fire.  She runs loops around younger nurses 20 years her junior -- triaging runs, starting hard IV sticks, managing the zoo.  Yet, she can stop and hold the hand of a patient that has just lost a baby or console a patient in severe pain from a long bout of cancer.  No matter how rude the patient, she responds with respect.  She treats all patients fairly, no matter if the patient is a donor, a famous actor, or everyday blue collar.”

“Alison has always been a kind and compassionate nurse ever since I first started at this hospital.  She treats every patient equally whether it is an elderly patient with a maze of diseases or a pediatric patient with a leg injury.  There is no patient too complex or too simple for her.

She is an excellent charge nurse as well.  She is definitely a nurse advocate.  She is always fighting for us and we greatly appreciate it.  She is the reason for why I strive to be a better charge nurse day by day.”

“I gave up all my weekends/nights just so I could work with Alison as my charge RN.  And I am not the only one.  Alison is wonderful and caring.  She is a patient advocate.  She is an advocate of her staff.  She has immaculate bedside manner and patient care.  Her nursing skills are excellent.  She is the only nurse in my six years of nursing that I can say I would love to be as great a nurse as she.  She is the textbook RN that I imagined when going through nursing school…until her I though it was just a myth!!!!  Alison is awesome!!!  Wonderful RN!!! Wonderful woman!!!”
